Technical information:
"Yes. I know, I know: hey its Gandalf! No it
isn't. I designed this character back in high school(1986). I only
read the lord of the rings in 1999 (at least I tried couldn't finish
it. Not enough action... but peter Jackson took care of that :)!)
. I realize this character resembles gandalf alot because of the long
beard. Then again what do you want me to do. If I cut his hair you
get Ben Kenobi... there's just no way out of this. So I simply left
him as is. Besides, in terms of personality, it's a completely different
character.....
I came across this passage of chuan-zu describing an old wise man
and it reminded me of what I wanted to convey though this character:
" A very old yet vital man. Skin and
flesh as white as snow
his manner was elegant and delicate. He did not eat any of the five
grains but inhaled the wind and drank the dew. He mounted the clouds,
drove along the flying dragons, rambling and enjoying himself beyond
the four seas. By the concentration of his spirit like powers he could
save men from disease and pestilence and secure every year a plentiful
harvest."
In order to move away form the "gandalf box" I let myself
be inspired by those really cool martial arts kung-fu masters as portrayed
in Asian martial arts movies (pai-me, aka-hige, the bad guy in fearless
hyena, etc...).
Through this character I'm trying to release the sadness and disappointment
I feel when I look at how we behave as human beings. I thought we
were more evolved...
